Three Day Workshops

1. Tablet Band Incorporated into Fabric: make a unique fabric
   Through my studies of Iron Age textiles I became fascinated with combining tablet weaving with loom weaving. In this workshop the participants will learn how to add a tablet band into a piece of fabric. A simple tablet weaving technique, the threaded-in technique, will be taught. A tablet warp will be made and the participants will be taught how to arrange the tablet warp within the fabric warp that has been wound on the loom ahead of time. Participants will learn how two warps can be woven together using only one shuttle and how to avoid tension problems between the two warps, Additionally, participants will learn how to accommodate the difference in take up of the two weaves. A small piece of fabric will be woven and it can be used for a small bag or a table runner.

2. Pebble Weaving with Tablets meets Fabric:

In this workshop the participants will learn how to add a tablet band into a piece of fabric. How to weave pebble weave with tablets and how to design patterns for the technique will be taught.  Pebble weave can be used to weave animals, symbols; flowers etc. and make a delightful accent to a piece of fabric.  A tablet warp will be made and the participants will be taught how to arrange the tablet warp within the fabric warp that has been wound on the loom ahead of time. Participants will learn how two warps can be woven together using only one shuttle and how to avoid tension problems between the two warps, Additionally, participants will learn how to accommodate the difference in take up of the two weaves.

3. Tablet Woven Side Borders: tablet borders woven simultaneously with loom weaving
   Through my studies of ancient textiles I became fascinated with the concept of weaving tablet woven borders jointly with a piece of fabric on the loom. This technique was used on many of the ancient garments I have studied. Students will be introduced to this type of weaving through a brief introduction to its history. They will set up a loom with a simple weave structure and learn how to make a tablet warp and how to arrange it beside the fabric warp so the border and the fabric can be woven together using only one shuttle. They will also be taught how to avoid tension problems between the border warp and the fabric warp and how to accommodate for the differences in the take up of the two weaves. A simple tablet weaving technique will be employed and the students will learn how to add embellishments to the tablet woven border, such as tassels, twining, beads at the edges and on the surface, braiding overlay, wrapped warp ends, loops, Ghiordes knots, and brocading.

4. Tablet Weaving for Beginners
   The workshop will introduce the participants to the versatility of tablet weaving and how it can be applied into finished projects or as embellishments on woven items. They will become familiar with the tools and the best yarn to use for specific projects. The students will learn the difference between threading defined patterns and turning defined patterns. They will be introduced to three different tablet weaving techniques such as threading-in designs, regular double-faced tablet weaving, and pebble weave. How to design original patterns and how to use these patterns to weave motifs in a band will be explored.

5. Timeless Tablet Weaving
   In this workshop the participants will be introduced to three tablet weaving techniques; regular double-faced tablet weaving, double-faced 3/1 broken twill, and the `missed hole’ technique. In this workshop three warps will be made. The basic techniques and how to interchange colours between the two faces (weaving motifs) will be taught. How to design original patterns will also be explored. Projects will be started. Several samples will be available for inspiration. Students are invited to bring tablet woven projects they would like to share.
